The
practice of aromatherapy has been around for centuries,
going right back to the Ancient Greeks and the Egyptians,
so is not such a new therapy, just one that had
been temporarily forgotten! In present times aromatherapy
has become very popular - people are finding that
they can use it to alleviate the stresses of modern
life.
These oils have many properties and being plant
essences they work in a natural way bringing the
body back into balance.
There
are many bath products, body lotions and candles
on the market containing varying oils to give that
feeling of calmness and well-being.
For
more acute or chronic problems it is advisable to
seek the help of a qualified aromatherapist, who will
listen very carefully, taking a full health profile,
and choose the oils accordingly for a treatment. Three
to four oils will be needed creating a synergy. They
will be mixed with a carrier oil, such as sweet almond
oil and massaged into the body. During the treatment
the person is wrapped in warm towels and a deep state
of relaxation is induced, as the therapist massages
away all stresses and tensions.
One
and a half hours should be allowed for the whole session
and it is advisable to rest completely afterwards
to make the most of the treatment. Depending on the
problems, it may be necessary to have a course of
6 treatments at regular intervals so that the oils
have a chance to work at their best. This can be discussed
at the first consultation when a treatment plan can
be worked out. Or maybe one treatment as a luxurious
pampering session is all that is needed. This can
make a wonderful gift.
The
Benefits
The oils work in varying ways -
firstly on the sense of smell, the most primal part
of the brain. As a result we can feel calmer to rest
or sleep, more uplifted, or stimulated for greater
concentration. From a physical and/or emotional point
of view the following symptoms can be alleviated:
Muscular pain
High stress levels
Can help with depression
Circulatory problems
Menstrual problems & Premenstrual tension |
Headaches
Fatigue
Difficulties during bereavement
Menopausal problems
Insomnia |
Sometimes
flower remedies are added to the mixture of oils.
Again these are totally natural and work in harmony
with the system. They add another dimension, working
particularly with the emotional and spiritual aspects
- being gently powerful and capable of clearing energetic
blocks.
